I found this. It’s slow as balls but a big non turbo diesel engine surely should be tough.

I’ve heard horror stories about those SDIs. Part of the problem is that the gas pedal is like an on/off switch due to the lack of power, but that’s not the only issue. A similar vintage TDI will be better, despite the extra parts.

Skodas are good cars these days mostly.

yea about your parents...

just get something that will pass MOT. 100quid, tops if they are really as bad as you say they are, nothing will help them other then learning the hard way.

The Skoda Felicia 1.9D I drove in 2000 around the UK was horrible.

in Northern Scotland , driving along one road , I forget which one just by going around the bend it tried to throw me off the road , not just once , but twice.

I seriously considered the 1.4tdi Fabia estate before the Octavia. It comes extremely well reviewed, with plenty of space inside, and a fairly bulletproof engine, seemingly only beaten in reliability by the venerable 1.9tdi. Can’t remember if they do a 1.9tdi in that year Fabia...? May be worth a look.

But then again, there’s no turbo so it can’t fail.

Wouldn’t a petrol one be better at this kind of mileage? There’s no turbo or DPF to fail of course so there’s that.

He could do a lot worse tbh but does he need the dirty diesel, would a petrol one not be cheaper?

This may be worth a look, although I assume it will need some work to get through MOT. And a VERY good clean. They don’t really rust though, so apart from that bonnet damage there shouldn’t be much else. £195.

Saw this car on Auto Trader’s Android App. Thought you might be interested. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/adv…

Ah, yes. That seems like a perfectly good car to buy. [Don’t make a joke about it being a VW diesel. Don’t make a joke about it being a VW diesel. Don’t make a joke about it being a VW diesel]

The 1.4 petrol is terrible and I can’t find a 1.2 cheap enough.

I’m not sure. Even if there is I doubt they’ll be cheap enough.

Wait for TDI prices to plummet and buy one. VW has stepped in it big time.

Might just leave him with his Crapso for now. It only has a couple thousand miles left in it though. If that.

Doubt it’ll affect the sub £1’000 market much. That said I interviewed with a company that works with VW today. They seemed concerned...

We had a Felicia and I can assure you, they’re not as bad as that now. The Felicia was kind of the last car before they really got their act together under VW.

Non-turbo diesel? Avoid at all cost. There are much better reliable things

My criteria are sub £800, nearby and available now, there aren’t many nicer reliable things. Although I’ve now ruled this one out because the timing belt hasn’t been changed in ages.
